Are You Hiring? - An Original Poem
They used to push me into school all day
to get good marks, childhood can wait.
They showed pictures and movies so bright
of how life can be, if I studied all night.
I worked my way through college, while taking loans,
I did what they said, just to get ahead.
I worked my way through college to get my foot in the door.
Are you hiring? I'll work for bread!
I worked my way toward retirement on the factory floor,
seventy hours a week kept me unwed.
I worked my way toward retirement until the factory left.
Are you hiring? I'll work for bread!
Do you remember planing our lives
by grandpa's pool in the summer heat?
But your's ended early from an IED
and I'm forgotten on this busy street.
Hey buddy, it's me, you know, Jim from the factory.
No, no! The union died when the factory fled.
It's so good to see you and if you have any openings,
anything at all, I'll work for bread!
I wrote this poem to pay homage to one of my favorite writer's songs “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” by Yip Harburg's. Yip Harburg was blacklisted from Hollywood for 12 years for his socialist views regarding the treatment of the working class within the United States, which he inserted into the music and dialog of The Wizard of Oz. The Munchkins represented the labor or the little guy and the Wizard was his depiction of Wall Street.
