A Better Life

You promised a better life:
Happiness, freedom, dreams—
A future.

But when I arrived, you battered me
Locked me in bathrooms
Told me not to speak
That I was nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

You promised me a better life,
Took me from all that I knew
Made me worship a new God—
You.

Told me this was a better life.
