The Words of a Father (Original Poem)

in #poetry8 years ago (edited)

My son, listen to me in these days of your youth
Oh daughter of mine hear the words of a true and loving father
You see these eyes, they've seen
My ears have heard and my mind has run riots on the streets of time

I have seen things too great for me to comprehend
And I have heard words too heavy for my soul to bear
I have done things that demean wisdom and confine understanding to oblivion
but still, I hold it a duty, a burden of responsibility to tell you the truth, so please listen

I have learnt that victory is not always to the deserving
Nor success to him who works the hardest
That life does not always play fair or leave for you a bed of roses
And terror needs no invite to visit thee or invade thy space

That you must be ready at all times for war.
So, guard your loins with courage and fortify yourself with truth
Give an arm and a leg to jump on the same boat with integrity
And never let your eyes know sleep till justice has been restored to its throne

Lend peace your choicest robe
And give honesty a regular place at your table
Make self-control your ruthless body guard
And carry compassion like a new born suckling at its mother's breast

I have seen that ultimate power rests in the hands of the one and only true King
Search for Him my son! Search my daughter with all you've got
And when you've found Him, your journey will know no truer meaning
Your life will find no greater purpose or know no greater peace.

Then honor will find you and stand you in good stead
Wisdom will applaud you even as you appear from afar
Understanding will usher you in to the presence of men of great means
Even power will run to thee to be but thy greatest ally

The crowns of women will roll out the carpet in honor of thy accomplishments
And the daughters of men will line the streets in glorious shout of your name
Angels will clear the path of thorns and even men will doff their hats for you
Suddenly life will surrender all it had hidden from thee and wealth will no longer be a stranger to you.

Life can switch and change your fortune any time.
ups and downs, topsy turvy, crests to troughs
But one thing is needed of you to stay the course
If only you'll listen to these words of a true and loving father.
