Brandywine Toast
To ocean's depth where the old salt lives
To Slattery's crew, seasoned and true
Remember their peril, all hands stand-to
A trap set, Groshkov got his gun
Come and see o' silent one
We've something new under the sun
"Brandywine, Brandywine. This is Steamer, Steamer over."
Come in Brandywine!
Let's play a game said the bear to a wary scorpion
I hear your chatter, I know you're out there
Come, let me see you, called the bear from his cave
Up came the scorpion just to see this great beast
And down came the claw, no time to leave a sting
Toast bears and scorpions and songs of their dead
And to futures of recompense, revenge and it's dread
"Brandywine, Brandywine. This is Steamer, Steamer over."
Come in Brandywine!

We missed you!!!!
It seems like I've been away forever!
So much sadness to this poem, for the lives lost, for bereaved families not being able to be given the full story, and for a hopeful hail that will forever be unanswered.
Is this one of your favourite verses? I've never heard it before.
I just completed reading the book "All Hands Down" about the sinking of a U.S. Nuclear Powered Submarine in 1968 and this post is in response to that story. As a Submarine Sailor, I had heard the rumors surrounding this event during most of my enlistment, but since the evidence was filed away in top secret vaults there was only the "official" i.e. cover story to go by. After reading this book I now know that the rumors I heard then were true and only slightly exaggerated.
Thank you :) I understand now.
