of unconditional love,
and the fierceness of a smile
in the face of fear.
You’ve taught me how to embrace hardship
and how to embrace your family
You’ve taught me how to be poor
in greed, arrogance, and revenge,
and how to be rich
in compassion, play, and selflessness.
You’ve taught me that the strongest person
is like bamboo,
able to bend with the wind,
and the wisest person
is like water,
finding the path of least resistance.
You’ve taught me that friendship is measured
by how many bowls of noodles and cups of tea are shared,
and that a warm kitchen with open arms
can cure any heartship.
You’ve taught me the sound
of belonging, of home,
and the fierceness of a mother’s love
that is the strongest song in the world.
