I would say he was. Who needs Buddha or Jesus when you have Walt? Here's a small excerpt from "Song of Myself"

It depends on how one defines Enlightenment, IMO....
He captures 'the gap' in meditation quite nicely here, but that doesn't necessarily translate into accurate metaphysics; which, IMO, is not entirely possible....
enlightenment is truth realization not a "belief" or knowledge. Maybe he was just a mystic but he arrived at his knowledge by himself. I read that he eventually read the bhagavad gita but after leaves of grass.
I never mentioned that it was although, Gnosticism, as framed within religion, would assert that knowledge is identical to truth....
As for myself, being an Agnostic Gnostic, when it comes to truth--it cannot be asserted definitely.
Even The Aeons don't know what The Pleroma is......
I agree with that. The only thing you can EVER know is that you exist and you know nothing.
