Rhyme XXI & Rhyme XIII By Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

Rhyme XXI
What is poetry? you ask, while fixing
your blue pupil on mine.
What is poetry! And you are asking me?
Poetry... is you.

Rhyme XIII
How blue your eyes are, and when you laugh
How their soft clarity reminds me
Of the tremulous shine of morning
The sea reflects upon its waters.

How blue your eyes are, and when you cry
How the crystal tears that well up in them
seem to me the drops of dew
That collect upon a violet.

How blue your eyes are, and how their depths
Can radiate an idea like a point of light,
How much they seem to me a lost star
In the evening sky! Oh!

---------------------------Original----------------------------

Rhyme XXI
¿Qué es poesía?, dices mientras clavas
en mi pupila tu pupila azul.
¡Qué es poesía! ¿Y tú me lo preguntas?
Poesía... eres tú.

Rhyme XIII

A brief info on poet :

Gustavo Adolfo Claudio Domínguez Bastida, better known as Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (February 17, 1836, Seville – December 22, 1870) was a Spanish post-romanticist poet and writer (mostly short stories), also a playwright, literary columnist, and talented in drawing. Today he is considered one of the most important figures in Spanish literature, and is considered by some as the most read writer after Cervantes.[4] He adopted the alias of Bécquer as his brother Valeriano Bécquer, a painter, had done earlier. He was associated with the post-romanticism movement and wrote while realism was enjoying success in Spain. He was moderately well known during his life, but it was after his death that most of his works were published. His best known works are the Rhymes and the Legends, usually published together as Rimas y leyendas. These poems and tales are essential to the study of Spanish literature and common reading for high-school students in Spanish-speaking countries.
