( poetry ) # 92 Origin of the cult of Cybele , the Mother of Gods with the Athenians

Man , called Matrou , traveling through Attica ,
Initiated there the women in the cult of Cybele , the Mother of Gods ,
As inhabitants tell.
The Athenians threw him a gully and kill him .
Soon after these an epidemic followed,
And the oracle rebuked them and told them
To propitiate the soul of the deceased .
So , they erected on the site
Where they had killed Matrou a curia - house of assembly ,
And after fencing it ,
They consecrated it to the Mother of Gods ,
Erected a statue to Matrou ,
And filled in white earth and said gully .
Matrou was later used for the depositing and conservation of the laws .
