It was genuine, but you, yourself cannot see it you weren't aware of the significant of other's feelings as you stab them with your knife-like words.
But goodness gracious, they put up with it. Oh dear, do you remember your promise? You didn't put any action to it. Shedding tears in silence, soaked pillows as they slept it off.
