Memorial Day Poem

in #poem9 years ago

Here is a poem I wrote about Memorial Day.

MEMORIAL DAY

Cook-outs and parties and a day off from work
And on the beaches we play,
American flags are raised all over this land
Memorial Day is today.

Every last Monday of May is set aside
For this American Holiday,
Sadly, many people have forgotten the true meaning
Of Memorial Day.

Does anyone remember the spring of 1865?
It was the end of the Civil War,
A National Cemetery was established for all of the many lives lost
Our sadness was felt to our core.

3:00 P.M. is the moment of remembrance
They all deserve our respect,
It's a somber day for our military members
Please take the time to reflect.

Over 1.8 million soldiers have died since 1775, for our freedom we so love,
We mourn with flags at half-mast until noon,
Then with pride, we raise "Old Glory" ever so high, as to reach
The sun, the stars and the moon.

Honor our military who gave their lives
With prayers and tributes too,
Decorate their graves with flowers and flags
And to all...we give thanks to you.

Our soldiers are why this is the LAND OF THE FREE
And the HOME OF THE BRAVE,
Memorial Day is to honor them with pride and love for
The ultimate sacrifice they gave.

"I don't have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch, or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world." -President Ronald Reagan
