Broken

Darkness falls and I am alone.
Trapped in a state of endless turmoil,
Forever playing out the horrors of my tormented life.
There is no escape from the echoes of shattered dreams
And broken promises.
Only the taunting wisps of breath that share my bed.
Sleep is but another dimension of despair,
Magnifying the hopelessness
And emptiness that plagues my soul,
Smothering me with a heaviness that offers no sympathy,
Only eternal loneliness.
With fists of emotion I wage a never-ending battle,
Desperately attempting to hold on to my sanity,
As I longingly watch all of my hopes fade from view.
Every second, every breath in the night is a quest for survival,
Expecting each to be my last.
