Lovely to Hear from You: Episode 346

Sometimes people might contact us after having left on bad terms, or perhaps they contact us in a difficult situation when it is hard to hear from them. If we have practiced patience and even-mindedness, when they call us we will be pleased all the same.

In a classic story about the Buddha, a man hears about this teacher who is leading his son down a strange path. The man approaches the Buddha while he is teaching dharma to the seekers, curses Him and spits in His face. The Buddha just keeps smiling the whole time, and bids the man farewell.

The man walks off and thinks about this strange reaction. It occurs to him that perhaps the Buddha is a true teacher, that his son is following a man who will indeed show a spiritual path.

The next day, the man returns to apologise to the Buddha. The Buddha says he will not forgive the man, because he is not the same person who received the curses the day before. The Buddha had already let go of the events so completely, that he had no reason to hold a grudge. And so, He invited the man to join them.
