Perhaps there are two ways to get ahead in life.

One way might be to learn the tricks of the trade, creating the appearance that you know what you’re doing. Another might be to learn the fundamentals of the trade, knowing it thoroughly so it’s clear you know what you’re doing.

One way might be to develop your cunning, managing and controlling everything you possibly can, planning ahead and being very smart - thinking ahead of those who might have ambitions of their own. The other way might be to develop your character, inspiring others to help you and wish you well.
