Creepy horror story
Whilst investigating the death of a local fishmonger, a virtuous psychiatrist called Dan Wilson uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, crumpled rock circulating throughout Canada. As soon as anyone uses the rock, he or she has exactly 24 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look zombified. A marked person feels like a vast badger to touch.
Dan gets hold of the rock, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a backward owl balancing on a fluffy fishmonger, an old newspaper headline about a golfing accident, a hooded elephant ranting about ankles and a drinking well located in a crowded place.
When Dan notices his fingers have badger-like properties, he realises that the curse of the crumpled rock is true and calls in his uncle, a swordsman called Gregory Godfrey, to help.
Gregory examines the rock and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the backward owl balancing on a fluffy fishmonger particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Dan and Gregory pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded elephant. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
