Whilst investigating the death of a local shopkeeper, an optimistic painter called Daniel Pitt uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, tiny hat circulating throughout Ireland. As soon as anyone uses the hat, he or she has exactly 70 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look grey. A marked person feels like a spotty rabbit to touch.
Daniel gets hold of the hat, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a false goldfish balancing on a tiny shopkeeper, an old newspaper headline about an apocalyptic accident, a hooded goldfish ranting about lips and a drinking well located in a rural place.
When Daniel notices his eyelashes have rabbit-like properties, he realises that the curse of the tiny hat is true and calls in his uncle, a detective called Matthew Connor, to help.
Matthew examines the hat and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the false goldfish balancing on a tiny shopkeeper particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Daniel and Matthew pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded goldfish. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
