Miasto Lwów / Leopolis

Discovering new places is always exciting and stimulating, but at times it's good to be back to well known location. That's why two weeks ago, me and J. went to Lwów (L'viv) for the third time. In order to avoid waiting for three hours at the border, we went to Przemyśl, where we took a train to Lwów.

Odkrywanie nowych miast jest ciekawe i stymulujące, czasem jednak dobrze jest wrócić do znanego nam miejsca. Dlatego dwa tygodnie temu wybraliśmy się z J. do Lwowa po raz trzeci. Aby nie stać trzech godzin na granicy, pojechaliśmy do Przemyśla, skąd odjeżdżał pociąg do Lwowa.

The bus from Lublin arrived with a significant delay and we had only 20 minutes to transfer to the train, so there wasn't time to see the city. The journey to Lviv was comfortable and fast - two hours after entering the train we were at the main railway station in Lwów.

Bus z Lublina przyjechał ze sporym opóźnieniem i mieliśmy tylko 20 minut na przesiadkę do pociągu, więc nie było czasu na zwiedzanie miasta. Podróż do Lwowa była komfortowa i szybka - dwie godziny po wejściu do wagonu byliśmy na głównym dworcu we Lwowie.

We bought tickets at a nearby kiosk and got on a tram going to the city centre, where we picked up keys to the apartment from the owner. We were quite tired, so we went to sleep without going for a walk around the city.

When visiting the familiar place you can give yourself a break; order coffee without regret, knowing that you don't waste time that could be spent on exploring. Have lunch at the restaurant, knowing that it will be as good as it was last time. The hurry, the stress of moving around, "to do" lists are gone. Being in Leopolis for the third time we could fully enjoy the atmosphere of the city.

We wanted to eat our first breakfast in Lviv out. Our apartment had a great location - after a few minutes we were in the Old Town, among dozens of cafes and restaurants. We chose French cuisine and went to "Tante Sophie".

W pobliskim kiosku kupiliśmy bilety i wsiedliśmy do tramwaju jadącego do centrum, gdzie odebraliśmy klucze do apartamentu od właściciela. Byliśmy dość zmęczeni, więc darowaliśmy sobie spacery po mieście i poszliśmy spać.

Odwiedzając ponownie znane miejsce można wrzucić na luz. Zamówić bez żalu kawę, wiedząc że nie tracimy czasu, który moglibyśmy poświęcić na zwiedzanie. Zjeść obiad w restauracji, wiedząc że będzie tak dobry jak ostatnio. Znika pośpiech, stres związany z przemieszczaniem się, listy "do zobaczenia". Będąc po raz trzeci we Lwowie mogliśmy w pełni nacieszyć się atmosferą miasta.

Pierwsze śniadanie we Lwowie chcieliśmy zjeść na mieście. Nasz apartament położony był w świetnej lokalizacji - po kilku minutach byliśmy na Starym Mieście, wśród dziesiątek kawiarni i restauracji. Postawiliśmy na kuchnię francuską i poszliśmy do "Tante Sophie".

After a filling breakfast (Eggs florentine and frittata) and a coffee in Virmenka we were ready to explore the city. We walked where the day took us, moving further and further away from the city centre.

Po sycącym śniadaniu (jajka po florentyńsku i frittata) oraz kawie w Ormiance (Virmenka) byliśmy gotowi na zwiedzanie miasta. Poszliśmy gdzie nas nogi poniosą, oddalając się coraz bardziej od centrum.

Greatest treasure of Leopolis is its architecture. Medieval walls, Baroque temples, tenement houses from 20's and 30's. Leopolis is home to over fifty percent of the monuments of modern Ukraine. Moving away from the Market Square and the main tourist trails, we still came across examples of beautiful architecture, forgotten and neglected testimony to the rich history of the city.

Największym skarbem Lwowa jest jego architektura. Średniowieczne mury, barokowe świątynie, przedwojenne kamienice. We Lwowie znajduje się ponad pięćdziesiąt procent zabytków współczesnej Ukrainy. Oddalając się od Rynku i głównych szlaków turystycznych wciąż natykaliśmy się na przykłady pięknej architektury, zapomniane i zaniedbane świadectwo bogatej historii miasta.

We returned for dinner to the center, to the infallible Khinkalnya on Fedorova Street. After stuffing our stomachs with chinkali and chachapuri we went for a walk around the Old Town. We spent the evening walking around Lviv and taking pictures. Along the way, we bought a few things for dinner.

Wróciliśmy na obiad do centrum, do niezawodnej Chinkalni na Fedorowa. Po nafaszerowaniu naszych brzuchów chinkali i chaczapuri poszliśmy na spacer po starym mieście i tak upłynął nam czas do wieczora. Kupiliśmy przy okazji kilka rzeczy na kolację.

Moving around Lviv during the rush hour is extremely frustrating. Overcrowded trams, city buses and marshrutki. Drivers are honking and screaming at each other - we saw with our own eyes how a driver letting pedestrians on the crosswalk (it was green) was bullied by the rest of the drivers and forced to drive on the red light. Ordinary walking through Svobody Avenue to order take-away coffee exhausted us terribly. But we had another day ahead of us in Leopolis....

Poruszanie się po Lwowie w godzinach szczytu jest wyjątkowo frustrujące. Przepełnione tramwaje, autobusy i marszrutki. Wszyscy na siebie trąbią - na własne oczy widzieliśmy, jak kierowca przepuszczający pieszych na pasach (było zielone) został sterroryzowany przez resztę kierowców i zmuszony do przejazdu na czerwonym. Zwykłe przejście przez Prospekt Swobody, żeby zamówić kawę na wynos okrutnie nas wymęczyło. Przed nami był jednak kolejny dzień we Lwowie...
