Choi Sun Sil-Gate

Today, South Korean president Park Geun Hye (PGH) was impeached by the Korean National Assembly. For weeks, millions of Koreans participated in mass demonstrations demanding the president’s impeachment since revelations surfaced of corruption and sharing of government information with her secret confidant.

Choi Sun Sil, a close friend of Park Geun Hye since childhood, was found to be in possession of government documents and acted as Park’s closest advisor on a range of matters. The Korean news outlet JTBC discovered a discarded laptop at Choi Sun Sil’s secret Seoul apartment. There are also swirling allegations accusing Choi of influence peddling. Choi set up charities that acted as fronts for corporations and special interest groups that made large donations in hopes of gaining access to the president.

This may sound eerily familiar to those who have been following the pay-to-play model of the Clinton Foundation. Large donors make contributions to the ‘charity’ in order to gain access, influence or favorable treatment.
Yet, the similarities do not end there. The Korean people have not only been disgusted by the financial corruption but, perhaps to a larger extent, many have been outraged by Park’s connection to a religious cult. Park’s confidant, Choi Sun Sil, is the daughter of Choi Tae Min the founder of the ‘Eternal Life Church’ a religious cult that draws from traditional Shamanism, Buddhism and Christianity. Choi Tae Min falsely claimed that he had the power to cure incurable diseases, but despite this obvious fraud the ‘church’ has amassed significant wealth and power over time.
When her father, the Korean military dictator, Park Chung Hee was assassinated in 1979, Park was still a young lady and was left parentless. Her mother was killed in a previous assassination attempt on her father.
Her father had been close with Choi Tae Min and after his death PGH disappeared from public life. She was taken in by Choi Tae Min and it has been reported that he had ‘control over her mind and body’.

Rumors are rife that the late pastor had complete control over Park’s body and soul during her formative years and that his children accumulated enormous wealth as a result.

Park has been very quiet about her religious beliefs and has mostly kept them personal in order not to offend the large Christian voter block. Nevertheless, she has conducted a ‘goot’ (a type of exorcism) ceremony in the Blue House (Korean equivalent to the White House) for her deceased parents. Performing a ‘goot’ is not uncommon in Korea but Christians generally disapprove of the practice.

This type of religious exorcism comes from the traditional shamanistic practices and is similar to the Buddhist religious ceremony called “cheondo-jae”. Cheondo-jae is intended to expunge all negative karma and resentment that accumulate during one’s life, to purify one’s mind and to help people obtain a favorable rebirth.

Many Koreas who wanted to see PGH impeached believe that she is under the control of Choi Sun Sil who even selects the presidents wardrobe for special state functions and international visits. However, more damaging allegations came from the JTBC that reported Choi even edited Park’s presidential speeches.

In late October 2016, PGH addressed the nation partially admitting to the allegations during a televised public apology. She defended Choi as an old and dear friend but avoided addressing any of the revelations directly.

The impeachment vote occurred at 3:00 pm (Seoul time) on Friday with 234 members of the National Assembly voting in favor of impeachment and 56 opposing votes. The impeachment of president Park is a bitter sweet victory for the Korean people but many unanswered questions remain.

There are darker connections some have made, conspiracy theories if you will, related to Park’s occult practices and the possibility of child sacrifice involved in the tragic Sewol sinking. This subject is a bit of a taboo and rarely spoken about in Korean media. I intend to go into greater detail about this issue in future posts.
