Pitchperfect week 16: Der Haupff Auff
I’ve been playing the ukulele for almost 10 years now, and one of the things that first drew me to it was my interest in early music. Many people think the ukulele is strictly a happy little strumming instrument, when players like Tony Mizen (who arranged this piece from extant lute literature) and Valery Sauvage have proven time and time again that an ukulele has the quality of timbre and range to do lute and Renaissance/Baroque guitar repertoire justice. 🙂
While this piece was transcribed for standard ‘C’ ukulele (typically the soprano, concert, and tenor varieties), I am playing it here on my baritone ukulele (tuned like a tenor guitar). The nice thing is, I’m reading from tablature, and historically, tablature was what lute players played from. 😎

Baritone ukelele! There are different sizes? Thank you for the performance, it does sound very close to a lute, more so than a guitar would.

Thank you! Yes, there are different sizes of ukulele. Sopranos are tuned either A D F# B or the standard G C E A like the concert size (concert size is close to the same size as a mandolin). The tenor can be tuned to standard, or a step or two down, and the baritone is tuned usually like a tenor guitar (D G B E) but you can also get string now in standard tuning.
For classical, I like the baritone, because it also gives me greater access to different types of music (I can play guitar music, renaissance music, you name it). 🙂
