The Pirate Party Remains in Power and Gain Seats in Iceland Fall 2016
October 29th, 2016 the anticipated Iceland elections end with the leading parliamentary political party remaining in power.
Independent Party gained two seats bringing their seats to 21 from 19. The Pirate Party expected to be a contender to become the largest party of Iceland fell short gaining 10 seats from their previous 3.
That was huge excitement that the Pirate Party may have become the leading party in form the new government of Iceland. The excitement behind that largely surrounded them with the idea that Iceland would create a direct democracy government with an e-democracy system.
With the Independent Party left to form a government in Iceland, it is unclear if they will be able to partner to form a coalition with other parties in the parliament. Independent party is a center-right party where the remaining parties of Iceland are largely left parties.
There's still hope for the Pirates for if the Independent party is not able the form a coalition government it will be left to the left parties of Iceland to form a new coalition government.
The elections in Iceland happened early due to scandals surrounding one of the leading parties, the Progressive Party who had the head of State Prime Minister at the time.
The Panama Papers leak showed that the Prime Minister and his wife had secret accounts offshore and were not being honest with their country. After the financial collapse in 2008 Iceland's people have been fed up with the corruption their government. After 2008 they were radical enough to put their own bankers on trial and put many of them in prison
There may still be hope for a direct democracy pushed in Iceland. People must push forward the idea of direct democracy to regain control from corruption and put the power back in people's hands.
