We were students before. We were teenagers before. We are now being ourselves. Laziness is inevitable.

Although this article is meant for piano students, parents may refer this article to counter laziness of children nowadays.

It's good to be lazy sometimes, to balance our lifestyle. However, being lazy often will only 'improve' it getting better. We were already good at being lazy.

Laziness will make you lose your precious time, and make you forget about your dreams.

My students were also lazy, I couldn't stand it. We should encourage our children to be hardworking and think critically. So, now - I have done a little research, let's battle laziness.

1. Procrastinate your laziness

Put away your laziness because you can do that later. After you practice that scale or the piece of music that teacher has given you, then you can lay around and be lazy.

You will feel so good after completing one task of the day. Think, lazy later.

2. Please start with one hand practice

Yes, just the right hand. Practicing the notes slowly (then medium, then fast), with just the melody, will give you the satisfaction of completing a tune. Your sight reading will improve. Your confidence will be uplifted.

After mastering one hand, now start with left hand.

Nevertheless, only when each hand can master the tune, then you can attempt to play together. Think, at least one hand is mastered today. Tomorrow?

3. Divide the piece to mini parts

Breaking down the whole piece of 100 bars, you may aim for perfecting the first four bars, or first phrase. Then, move on the 2nd phrase. And so on. Don't get intimidated by so many black notes.

The whole piece of music score has 1000 notes, but begins with one note. Start there.

Think, small puzzle pieces make one big picture.

4. Be kind to yourself

Going to lessons without practicing is an invitation to your teacher to look at you angrily and scold you. Your teacher will get upset because she couldn't teach you new stuff. Because you're still lingering with the old stuff. As teacher, we want to grow, develop, teach new skills and new pieces. Think, if you had done your practice, your teacher and you would have a happy & pleasant lesson.

5. Schedule your laziness

Put down 'Lazy' in your schedule. For example:
2pm Homework 1
3pm Home work 2
4pm Lazy
5pm Shower
5.30pm Practice Piano
6.30pm Lazy

Think, you can be lazy twice on a day!
