Before we go into this; let's talk about Octave.
In case you're hearing it for the first time.

An Octave comprises of eight notes[Oct means 8]…
It also means holding similar keys/notes together.
Example
C and C together makes a C octave.
D and D together makes a D octave.
You can go on and on with that.
Okay, let's continue.

A major 7 chord comprises of the major triad with a note a half-step from the octave of the tonic[ Tonic is your first scale degree. What most folks call do]

Doh = Tonic
Reh = Supertonic
Mi = mediant
Fa = Subdominant
Sol = Dominant
La = Submediant
Ti = leading tone/note
Doh = Octave.

A major 7 chord is a tetra chord because it comprises of 4 notes.

It has its formula as 1-3-5-7

First get the major triad then next
Stretch your hand to the octave and move a half-step downward from the octave.

Let's try an example
C major 7 chord will comprise of C major triad as C-E-G.
Then stretch your pinky to get C octave as C-C' [C' indicates higher C note]
From that octave [C']love down a semitone
You'll have B.

Add it up to the C major triad we'll have C-E-G-B as C major 7 chord.

Let's try another example.
