What is light? (very simply)

in #physics6 years ago (edited)

This concept has been debated for many centuries, firstly it was thought that light was some sort of a particle and this was later backed up by Einstein with the photoelectric effect, which btw is what he is actually famous for in the area of physics.

But then Thomas young actually created an experiment called young's Double slit experiment which also showed some evidence for light being some sort of waves. You can google both those experiments and see for yourself, but in the end physicians have come to the conclusion that light is in "quanta pack" which is the being of quantum mechanics.
Let me know what you think about these experiments and what light is most likely.

Sort:

Light is most likely an oscillation between an electric and magnetic field. This has been backed up by numerous experiments and also multiple physical effects. Another interesting question is whether photons themselves are quantized, or is it simply a consequence of their modes of formation being quantized.

yes this is exactly why physics is so fascinating
