Photo: Chinese blue hole - the deepest in the world

in #photosoftheday6 years ago

New measurements of the failure near the Chinese city of Sansha have shown that it is deeper than all similar blue holes.

Blue holes are a class of natural formations that appear due to the destruction and erosion of rocks. They got their name because of the color of the water that fills the dips. Some of them are known to the whole world - such as, for example, the Big Blue Hole in Belize. And about others, few have heard.

One of these not very well-known blue holes turned out to be the world record holder. We are talking about the failure of Yongle, which is located near the Chinese city of Sansha. Locals also call it the “Dragon tunnel”. Scientists have long believed that the depth of this natural formation can reach more than 300 meters, but only now it was possible to confirm this.

Look at this unique natural wonder from all sides:

300.89 meters - this is the official depth of Yongle. This is almost a hundred meters more than the previous record holder - Dean’s Blue Hole with a depth of 202 meters, which is located in the Bahamas. Local authorities have already stressed that “Eternal Joy” (this is how the name of the hole is translated from Chinese) has great scientific, historical and cultural significance.
