Last year when we went up during the beginning of fall, the water temperatures were already nearing 0°C and the air around us was a crispy 5-8°C if the wind wasn't blowing.

Ahhh, another fellow South African :) As youngsters on a school trip we went to the Drakensberg and jumped into the icy rivers once. It knocked your breath away, some got nosebleeds, lol. So yeah, I can only imagine how cold it must have been there.
