Scenes From The Minnow's Tank
The Wife set up a marine aquarium with some of the naturally occurring species from our local beach. It turned out to be a great way to photograph some of the local wildlife we wouldn't have been able to see, otherwise.
The minnows around here are so thick that you can catch a load of them just by dipping a bucket into the cove. Does that remind you of any place else you know?
We haven't managed to wrestle a whale into our aquarium quite yet.
I love how surreal this photo is: the fish and seaweed in front of our kitchen door and the painting on the wall. The minnows didn't seem to concerned by the change in decor.
(I thought those blue eyes were a trick of the light, but when you get to the bottom picture you'll see them again. They really are that color!)
Spider crabs might seem pretty spooky when they pinch you in the shallows, but up close they're actually pretty funny - inquisitive climbers that became the jesters of the tank.
This spider crab climbed up on the back of a scallop and gave our minnow a good talking to. I think he might be a moderator.
The hermit crab was the friendliest of the bunch, although he needs to patch that hole in his house and brush the algae out of his hair. I wonder if he's just a troll in crab's clothing?
"What's up, guys? We done here?"
We only kept the setup for a couple of days before releasing the animals back into the cove. Personally, I found it a lot more interesting to watch than a high-end tropical tank. And these images just seemed too perfectly suited to the Steemit platform, not to share them.
Nice. What a great nature you had in your room. I have one like that and one turtle is living with a family of small fish in there.
Oh - share some pictures! We have some terrapins (marsh turtles) around here but they're too fast to catch and just as hard to photograph.
We did this every year when we were at the beach. If we could find a seahorse it was always the star of the show. Watching the starfish opening a clam was also memorable.
Lots of clams around here, not so many starfish. But now I'm on the lookout because I'd like to see that!
