How To Add Wind Blown Hair.

I had an amazing day! I found this perfect little watery nook to take photos at and I couldn't wait. I took my kids out after dinner for a shoot. I have so many treasures from today, but this is the first image I am editing. I wanted to start sharing my editing process. This is not ideal because I would very much rather have video, but I am having some technical issues rendering videos that I record with my screen capture. Once I get it figured out I will be able to do more complicated tutorials.

For this post unfortunately you will have to have at least a moderate understanding of Photoshop. If you can select, copy, paste and mask then you can do this.

The set up begins in the shoot. I took a static photo of my daughter sitting still. It is easier to get a nice facial expression. I find especially with kids as soon as things start moving their face goes with it! Once I got the base shot I stayed as much in the same position as I could (if you have a tripod even better).

My 9 year old son was my helper here... he grabbed the edge of the wig and at the count of 3 threw it up as I did a burst of shots.
You can get your model to throw their own hair if you have to, but because she was sitting in a tree I wanted her to hang on.

This makes it so easy in Photoshop to line up the background and really cut down on difficult selection and masking!

I opened the images I wanted to use in Photoshop, used the selection tool to select the piece of hair that I wanted and copied it and pasted it onto the base image. Since I am lining up the background this selection does not have to be exact. 1.jpg

Drag it over to the area you need it and start lining it up with where it needs to be. Once you are happy with the position add a layer mask and mask out the areas you don't need, then blend out the edges if you were like me and had a pretty solid cut line.

I had to repeat this process to get the tips of the hair from another image.

There I have it, wind blown hair.

When editing an image I do all of the composite work first. Putting all the pieces together first will help it look seamless later on. If they are like this shoot and the pieces are taken at the same time, same place, same camera settings it really is ideal. If you are a beginner at composite photography I highly recommend you start with a shot such as this!

Once I have all my pieces composited together I move on to any other edits that I want to do. She won't need any skin retouching but I would do that next, then dodging and burning. I would apply textures if I was planning on using them, I often do not, and then all my color adjustments happen at the end.

Now I am off to finish editing this image!

Really cool tutorial. I haven't learned to do burst shots with my phone camera yet but I read it's an option. I'll give it a try sometime. Hopefully one day I can get a real camera. You take lovely pictures and let your daughter know I said she has a promising future as a model if she pursues it. Just stunning!

Thank you 💕 I don’t know what kind of phone you have , but with my iPhone 7 holding down the button when taking a picture will get a burst. Maybe give that a try. Also, I’m a single mom I spend my money on my kids so I do not have fancy gear!! I couldn’t afford a camera so I entered every photography contest I could find and finally won a canon rebel! Where there’s a will there’s a way!!

Oh what a great idea!!! Where do you find photography contests? On steemit or on the web? I have a Galaxy 8 so I'm sure it's similar. These new phones are high tech, I'm sure there's even a button to make coffee. HAHA.

I wasn’t on steemit then... I don’t know if there’s contests here for cameras... I would just google to find things. Local contests are the best because there’s going to be less people entering. I live in British Columbia Canada and there was a BC Hydro/ London Drugs photo contest they were doing annually. I entered for 3 years and finally won on my 3rd try 😊

I did not know we can add wind blown hair in photoshop. Really cool method although I am just terrible with photoshop. I really try to play around in there but it simply does not like me.

You have a beautiful daughter willing to model for you and a helper son. What a loving family. I can’t wait until my kids reach that ‘helpful’ age.

Thank you for sharing your technique!

They aren’t always interested in participating, that’s why I end up with more self portraits than kids photos...but when they are it’s so much easier! I showed my daughter Kin Fables on YouTube she loved it so much she was totally down for a whimsical shoot last night 😊. My son on the other hand does not ‘model’ for me often I just get shots of his back looking off into the distance when he doesn’t know I’m taking his pic...funnily enough he’s gotten on more book covers than my 2 girls combined.

Those solitary back shots looking out at the world beyond are epic. Did he have his hands in his pocket too? 😉 You should try taking a side shot next time with her hair wind-blown and looking out at the ocean. That would give her a spot on the book covers, hehe.

My toddler son might be too small for kin fables but I will look it up. He turns away when I try to take a photo now. Sometimes I get those magical moments recorded. You have some good photos of your children from what I saw. Those are the best treasures.

I think all kids go through the phase of not wanting their photos taken, that’s where the back shots come in handy. My son was sitting so his hands were on his lap.
