Japanese Figures Collection

in #photography7 years ago

Hey guys it's me again. And right now I'm here to showcase one of the things I've been collecting. These are mostly Japanese wooden figures and I've been buying them off Japanese surplus shops.

So here are the shots of my collection. Some of these I'm not really sure what they are called but the ones that I do know I will give a brief explanation regarding them.

This is by far my favorite from my collection. I have tried searching around what it's called but I can't seem to find anything regarding what type of japanese figure/doll this is.

But it does look like the painted lady from Avatar The Legend of Aang right?

This one is a Kokeshi doll. Kokeshi dolls are Japanese wooden dolls that have no arms and legs. I first started taking an interest in these dolls when I watched the Japanese movie Kami-sama no Iu Toori where they appeared as monsters. To date I only have two kokeshi dolls in my possession but I am still looking for more.

This one is a Snow Coat Kokeshi. Like the first one, this is also a kokeshi doll but it is wearing a "mino" which is like a straw raincoat used to protect from snow and rain.

This one is a Daruma Doll. Daruma dolls are made so that when you push them they will always stay upright and they are hollow inside. These dolls are made to be a symbol of perseverance. When you get them their eyes hollow and it is up to you to fill them in. So you set a goal, fill in one of the eyes and after achieving that goal, you fill in the other eye. So it's kind of like a reminder for you that you still have some unfinished business whenever you look at your doll. Which in my case I still have not achieved my goal yet.

This one is just a Daruma Doll paperweight.

These are wooden tanuki (Japanese raccoon dogs).

I was also looking around to see what this one is called but I can't find it either. There was one site where I read that this was some sort of frog kokeshi doll. I'm not really sure.

And last but not the least is this little gem. I also do not know what this is called. I found this at a surplus shop and no one wanted to buy it because it looked creepy. If you look closely it would seem like blood is covering the right side of her face but it's actually because she is mostly made of crepe paper and it got wet and the color from her hair stuck to her face. Other than that it's a real interesting thing.

I used a low end camera phone to take pictures. Thanks to @fukumineko and my sister @jacinta.sevilla for letting me use the photobox thing which helped my camera phone a whole lot to get better pictures.

So that's it for now. I hope you guys found my collection interesting. I plan on buying more as soon as I find a decent place that sells them.

Until next time~
