Tryingtodoart #7 - First night out with my camera

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Everything was so new for me.

Wrapping my head around all those settings for the M (Manual) mode. ISO, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, numbers and numbers everywhere, was difficult and exciting at the same time. In comparison, it feels the same way right now when I am trying to understand more and more about crypto currency.

After I finished with the basics, I wanted more. So I got myself a small travel sized tripod and waited for my next day off. I had big plans. I wanted to have enough time to rest, after a whole night spent in Niagara Falls. In the city and in the park.

The main goal was to shoot the sunrise.

I started with the casino. The tallest building in town and the first landmark I noticed when I arrived in Niagara Falls. People were going in and out 24 x 7 from the casino, and it is quite a presence, especially at night. It looks almost like a robot guarding the town.

I am not a big fan of casinos and gambling, but photographically speaking it was an exciting place to see.

Night photography was even more complicated than I thought. I thought I can nail it without some thorough research prior. The only bad part was that it took me a long time to find out what and how to do.

After the casino, I went to the National Park, where the falls are. It was August and the temperature at night was just perfect.
On my way to the falls I took a couple of pictures with The Rainbow Bridge. It connects the USA part of the falls to the Canadian side.

When I got to the falls it was still dark but it wasn't a long wait until sunrise. By now I was very hungry and tired. The snacks I had with me were long gone and in an "anti-Eureka" moment I realised that the sun would rise in the opposite direction I was hoping for.

The light show regularly turns off at midnight, so the falls were not that impressive without any light. It was a sad lesson to learn. Know your light especially when you plan a photo shoot.

Instead of the falls, I took a picture of this tower, which connects the upper part of the park with the deck that takes the visitors to the Maid of the Myst boat trip around the falls. In the background, you can see the Sheraton Hotel in Canada.

I wish you all a great Sunday and, as always, thank you for stopping by!

I like your comparison with the DSLR manual mode. For me that's still a bit of a blur, hopefully it won't be the same with the crypto currencies :)

Fingers crossed :))
