Merry Christmas, Steemians! Today I wanna tell you something about a very nice European city that I visited this year in August. I guess most people, who haven´t been to Estonia, really don´t know what to expect of this country and its capital. Well, I can tell you, if you´re not expecting much, Tallinn will surprise you for sure, as there is a lot to see. At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. I was really impressed by the old buildings, the well-preserved city wall with its towers and of course by the ancient town hall, which was built in the 14th century. No wonder that the city's old town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. But Tallinn has also a modern face. Just a few steps from the city center you can find huge skyscrapers and stylish glass buildings. Most of them are hotels and shopping malls. This part of Tallinn feels completely different and is a nice contrast to the old town. If you walk further outside the center, you will reach the Kadriorg Palace, it´s surrounding park and a nice sandy beach just a few hundred meters from the castle, which is another reason to visit this area, but now I wanna show you my favourite photo spots:

Frohe Weihnachten, Steemianer! Heute möchte ich euch etwas über eine tolle europäische Stadt erzählen, die ich im August dieses Jahres besucht habe. Ich denke, viele Leute die noch nicht in Estland waren, wissen nicht wirklich was sie von diesem Land und seiner Hauptstadt erwarten können. Also ich kann euch sagen, wenn ihr nicht viel erwartet, wird euch Tallinn sicher überraschen, denn es gibt eine Menge zu sehen. Im historischen Zentrum befindet sich der Domberg mit seinen kopfsteingepflasterten Straßen, sowie mittelalterlichen Häusern und Gassen. Die Unterstadt, am Fuße des Domberges, wird von einer gut erhaltenen Stadtmauer geschützt, von der ich genau so beeindruckt war, wie von den schönen, alten Gebäuden und natürlich dem Rathaus, das im 14. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde. Kein Wunder, dass die Altstadt 1997 in das UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen wurde. Aber Tallinn hat auch ein modernes Gesicht. Nur ein paar Schritte vom Stadtzentrum befinden sich riesige Hochhäuser mit stilvollen Glasfassaden, die vor Allem Hotels und Einkaufzentren beherbergen. Dieser Stadtteil fühlt sich total anders an und ist ein netter Kontrast zur Altstadt. Wenn man sich noch weiter vom Zenrum weg bewegt, erreicht man das, von einem Park umgebene Schloss Katharinental. Nur ein paar hundert Meter davon entfernt, finden man einen feinsandigen Strand, der ein weiterer Grund ist, diesen Stadteil zu besuchen. Aber jetzt möchte ich euch meine Lieblingsplätze zum Fotografieren zeigen:

I was really lucky with the weather, because after some thunderstorm in the afternoon, the sky brightened for the sunset. Every travel photographer knows that this situation is like a jackpot, because with the reflections on the streets and the warm lighting, you can find many opportunities to take impressive shots, especially if you like HDR photography. There were puddles everywhere on the square which I used as mirrors to reflect the surrounding buildings and the sky. On this evening I took my favourite pictures of the whole journey. But don´t worry, even if you don´t have that perfect weather and lighting conditions, you will be able to take good pics, as the square itself is quite photogenic. The only disturbing thing is, that there are so many people walking around, who might accidentally destroy your image composition. So especially during the Summer months, you probably need some patience to find the perfect moment.

Ich hatte wirklich Glück mit dem Wetter, denn nach einem kräftigen Gewitter am Nachmittag, klarte der Himmel zum Sonnenuntergang wieder auf. Jeder Reidefotograf weiß, dass diese Wettersituation wie ein Jackpot ist, denn mit den Reflektionen auf den Straßen und der warmen Beleuchtung, findet mal viele Möglichkeiten vor, um beeindruckende Aufnahmen zu machen, vor Allem wenn man HDR Fotografie mag. Überall auf dem Platz waren Pfützen, die ich als Spiegel nutzte, um die Gebäude und den Himmel zu reflektieren. An diesem Abend schoss ich meine Lieblingsfotos der gesamten Reise, aber keine Sorge, auch ohne solch perfekte Bedingungen, kann man tolle Bilder machen, da der Platz selbst sehr fotogen ist. Das Einzige was stört, sind die vielen Leute, die herumlaufen und eure Bildkomposition unabsichtlich zerstören können. Also vor allem zur Hauptsaison im Sommer, braucht ihr wahrscheinlich etwas Geduld, um den perfekten Moment zu finden.

The center of the old town. Its main attraction is the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is one of the landmarks in Tallinn. But you might be struggling to take great photos of it. The problem is, that you won´t find a good angle there. The surrounding buildings are much too close, so you need a super wide-angle or even a fish eye lens to capture the whole cathedral. So you should better focus on the details of this beautiful church. But if you like taking photos, the main reason for climbing the hill is another. There are not less than four panoramic terraces and the best thing is, that you can visit all of them for free. My advice for you is not to waste too much time at the first viewpoint, next to the cathedral. Each of the other ones will give you a much better view. I had good luck there again, as some curious seagulls were posing for my camera ;-)

Das Zentrum der Altstadt, dessen Hauptattraktion die beeindruckende Alexander Nevsky Kathedrale ist. Sie ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Tallinn und trotzdem ist es schwierig, gute Fotos von ihr zu machen. Das Problem besteht darin, einen guten Winkel zu finden. Die umgebenden Gebäude sind einfach viel zu nah dran und man braucht schon ein Superweitwinkel- oder Fisheyeobjektiv, um die gesamte Kathedrale einzufangen. Ihr solltet euch also besser auf Details dieser wunderschönen Kirche konzentrieren. Aber wenn ihr gerne fotografiert, ist der Hauptgrund, den Berg zu erklimmen, sowieso ein anderer. Es gibt dort nicht weniger als vier Aussichtsterrassen, die ihr alle kostenlos besuchen könnt. Verschwendet nicht zu viel Zeit bei der ersten Aussichtsplattform neben der Kathedrale, jede der Anderen bietet eine viel schönere Aussicht. Ich hatte wieder Glück, denn ein paar neugierige Möwen posierten für meine Kamera ;-)

The Kadriorg Palace and the beach/Das Schloss Katharinental und der Strand

The beautiful baroque castle and its surroundings will give you some nice opportunities to take great pictures. While I was there on a sunny afternoon, it might be even better to take photos there in the evening. One thing you may enjoy is that this place is by far not as crowded as the old town, even during high season. The nearby beach is also a nice spot because of its soft and bright sand and the clear blue water. You can watch huge ferries and cruise ships leaving and entering the port terminal there.

Das wunderschöne Barockschloss und seine Umgebung bieten viele Möglichkeiten um tolle Aufnahmen zu machen. Während ich an einem sonnigen Nachmittag dort war, gelingen abends vielleicht sogar noch bessere Fotos. Sehr angenehm ist, dass dieser Ort selbst in der Hochsaison nicht überfüllt ist. Der nahegelegene Strand mit seinem hellen, feinem Sand und dem klaren, blauen Wasser ist ebenfalls ein gutes Fotomotiv. Ihr könnt hier auch beobachten, wie riesige Fähren und Kreuzfahrtschiffe in den Hafen einlaufen, oder ihn verlassen.

If you take the ship to Helsinki, which I highly recommend you, you should go directly to the sun deck, when the ship is leaving the terminal. There is no place onshore where you can capture such a great city panorama of Tallinn. The huge modern buildings on one side and the hill of Toompea on the other, the sea below, the sky above, it´s just a perfect opportunity to take incredible shots and finally you will have an amazing view of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral too.

Wenn ihr einen Ausflug mit der Fähre nach Helsinki macht, was ich euch wirklich sehr empfehlen kann, solltet ihr direkt zum Sonnendeck gehen, wenn das Schiff den Hafen verlässt. An Land wüsste ich keinen Ort, an dem man so ein tolles Stadtpanorama von Tallinn vor Augen hat. Die riesigen modernen Gebäude auf einer Seite, der Domberg auf der Anderen, oberhalb der blaue Himmel, unterhalb das Meer - es ist einfach eine perfekte Gelegenheit um unglaubliche Fotos zu machen und hier kann man auch endlich die Alexander Nevsky Kathedrale sehr gut einfangen.

Not many cities have such a well-preserved medieval wall on which you can even walk. It costs a few Euros but in fact it´s not expensive and you have another different perspective for your camera. I´m glad I took the chance.

Nicht viele Städte haben eine so gut erhaltene Stadtmauer, die man sogar begehen kann. Es kostet zwar ein paar Euro, ist aber nicht wirklich teuer und bietet euch eine weitere, neue Perspektive für eure Kamera. Ich bin froh, diese Chance genutzt zu haben.

My personal conclusion/Mein persönliches Fazit

I had two great days in Tallinn and it was enough to see the most important places and to take some nice photos. I can tell you that it´s a very clean, safe and modern city. Actually it feels quite Scandinavian and not much reminded me that once it was part of the Soviet Union. Tallinn is a capital, but not a metropolis, so maybe it´s not a place where you can stay for weeks and explore new places each and every day, but for its size, it´s one of the most amazing cities in northeastern Europe and definitely worth a visit. No matter if you like architecture, landscape or street photography, ancient or modern areas, viewpoints or beaches, Tallinn won´t disappoint you!

Ich hatte zwei großartige Tage in Tallinn und die Zeit war ausreichend, um die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten anzuschauen, sowie ein paar gute Fotos in dieser sehr sauberen, sicheren und modernen Stadt zu schießen, die sich eigentlich ziemlich skandinavisch anfühlt. Nicht viel erinnerte mich daran, dass sie mal ein Teil der Sowjetunion war. Tallinn ist eine Hauptstadt, aber keine Metropole, man kann dort vielleicht nicht Wochen verbringen und jeden Tag Neues entdecken, aber für ihre Größe, ist die Stadt eine der beeindruckendsten in Nordosteuropa und definitiv einen Besuch wert. Egal ob ihr Architektur- oder Landschaftsfotografie mögt, historische oder moderne Bereiche, Aussichtspunkte oder Strände, Tallinn wird euch nicht enttäuschen!
