Medieval stocks and whipping post [Rutland, UK]
Medieval stocks and whipping post that to this day remain in the village Market Overton, Rutland, UK.
The exact age of the stocks are unknown but the manor house next to it is dated 1337. The earliest records of the village itself are in the year 1086.
The stocks were used as a device to trap people by the feet so that they could be whipped. It was a form of physical punishment that also shamed the person in public.
These are pictures I took myself yesterday. I grew up in the village but I hadn't returned for at least 5 years. Since then the stocks have had the bottom restored, as you may have noticed in the picture. It's a shame it wasn't done better but at least it preserves it for longer.

Nice post, bud. 11th century! Wow... We have some scary relics indeed. I live in Nottingham and we have a pub with a prison cell in it. It was used as a half-way prison when they were transported across the country.
