Kings Canyon - Central Australia - A walk through a trail
Kings Canyon - Central Australia
Few weeks ago the family and I were on a small holiday and took a looong drive up to Central Australia which is 2337km or 1452.144Miles, it was a awesome experience and I still wish I was on the road driving around like a nomad.
And what a beautiful place this is, you drive thousands of KM's through outback Australia with flat surface wherever you look, then suddenly you get a big rock in the middle of nowhere.
Supposedly this place is fairly dry during this season (according to few people) but we were greeted by thunderstorm and rain, so we spend most of the remaining day in the cabin just relaxing and hoping that it won't be raining the following day.
It kept raining throughout the night and into the morning, it looked grim as I really wanted to get on the rock and see it for myself. But luckily as we drove to the car park it stopped raining and I was able to go for a walk.
It kept raining on and off so I had to use Samsung Galaxy to take the photos, which seems to take better quality photos then the Canon in overcast conditions.
Nice gentle walk up the rock, I thought it would be a little bit more challenging.
The walls of Kings Canyon are made of red, yellow and white sandstone.
You can see the thick rain clouds rolling in.
As you can see it started to rain while I was at the top, but luckily the rocks are not slippery, they seem to be smooth but they have a slight sandpaper texture to them.
The higher I went, the smaller the vegetation with occasional shrub.
As I was coming around large wall I saw this, and was very surprised to see this bushy green area. There was an entire wall of those ferns along this small creek.
A beautiful example of sandstone layers.
The very top, flat and windy.
Helicopter Ride!!!
After I got back from the walk, my Lovely wife told me I could take the helicopter ride with my daughter. The weather was clearing up which was great and on top of that the helicopter was on it's way back and no one in the line! We were fortunate enough because just 30min later a large group (10+ people) had booked the flights.
That large crack that you see is called "Garden of Eden"
Just 2 hours ago I was walking on the right hand side of that crack.
Samsung Galaxy S7
What a beautiful place and you we're so lucky to go on helicopter ride. Hopefully we will get there on our around the world trip next year.
Awesome!
Whoo that's some pretty stunning scenery!
and I've found my phone does better in overcast/dodgy lighting conditions than my big clunky Nikon as well, though I haven't been using the Nikon anymore anyway as it seems to have slowed down in its old age, I didn't even know cameras could do that
I love the colours of this country XD
Yea I loved it over there, definitely different :)
Looks like a great place to hike! Were those stairs some sort of ruins, or did they just build up the trail that way? The views sure look amazing. The chopper ride would have been the most fun for me, though!
Well the whole mountain is made up of those sandstone layers, so I'm guessing it wasn't hard to make stair out of them and fill in concrete where needed :)
Ah, that makes sense. The landscape is impressive, if a little desolate.
The landscape sort of reminds me of the badlands of South Dakota, although the badlands are sort of a stiff dirt instead of rock. The region is even more desolate and barren, but fascinating. Maybe I'll get a chance to go out there this winter and take some photos. It's been a couple decades...
That scenery is awesome, and you got to fly over it all too. Nice !!! It look like you had a really nice holiday.
