Crown of Thorns

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

A succullent shrub with numerous stems and semi-soft thorns and spines which bears two tiny bright overlapping petal-like bracts that surrounds an inconspicous, beautiful flower is a dailly reminder of a divine sacrifice.

Goes by the common name "Crown of Thorns" (Koronang Tinik in our language), the Euphorbia milli is a unique looking houseplant. Its stems are covered in sharp spikes. It has oval-shaped green leaves and its flowers come in different shapes and sizes, and colors of red, pink, salmon, and whites depending on the variety.

How to take care of the plant?

Euphorbia milli loves sunny weather and very easy to care. It requires minimal watering, but produces beautiful and vibrant flowers.

Watering should be done in the morning or early after before sunset so that the water on the leaves can dry off The blooms also do not last long during periods of frequent rainfall.

They require sunlight, and watering about once every 10-14 days.

Why Crown of Thorns?

Its called Crown of Thorns for a reason.
It is believed that the dried stem of this beautiful house plant curved into a circle is what made-up the crown thorns that Jesus Christ was made to wear during his crucifixion to save us sinners.

Pressed down in to His head, our savior willingly took the pain and paid the ultimate price for our salvation!

Caution

Apart from its thorns that could hurt you, its sap is also poisonous.

In a similar post, @tangmo explained that its sap causes irritation on contact with skin or eyes. If ingested, it causes severe stomach pain, irritation of the throat and mouth, and can induce vomiting. The poison contains 5-deoxyingenol.

This plant in not advisable for homes with pets and children.
