a crowded colony with chicks
St. Andrews is the second largest breeding colonies of King Penguins in the world and the actual largest on South Georgia Island, which is where we spent yesterday afternoon. The weather forecast was for the wind to increase, which would make landing close to impossible but good fortune prevailed with sunshine and little to no wind the entire time we were on land. That is a big win for an expedition to South Georgia.
Not only was I fortunate enough to get off the zodiac and walk around for a little bit but I was able to snap close to a 1,000 photos of the King Penguins as well as their neighbours, which are Elephant seals. Just a few beach masters were around too, which are impressive and a tad intimidating as you walk around the shoreline with 3 + tonne marine mammals snorting and belching at you and each other.
