An Epic Urbex Find!

It is things like this that make me fall in love with urbex more and more everyday!

On a very cold night we where wandering around and came across an old decaying garage. As we went inside of it, we realized that it was full of a bunch of old junk that we would have to climb over. Was it worth it? Would they be anything cool to see?

Making the decision to go for it seemed a little silly to me as I walked over an old restaurant counter, then over bags of old clothes, boxes of VHS tapes and children's toys. After checking out some of the toys from the 80's/90's I thought, not too bad but as a history junkie it wasn't anything special. Until we spotted not one, but two of these phones! The excitement was almost instant! How old could they be? Are they just decorative knock offs?

No not knock offs, that was for sure. We speculated at the age of them. Early 1900's? @mikeheinhold guessed pre-1927. I really couldn't believe what I was looking at! As soon as I got home I began researching historic telephones and found the exact model.

It is a Northern Electric (company name is now Nortel) local battery phone manufactured in 1953! These types of phones where discontinued in the U.S. during the 1940's but the rural nature of Canada at the time meant there was still a need for them. Northern electric produced them in Canada until the 1960's.

These rare finds and researching/learning about our history is what I live for!
