The monastery was erected in the beginning of the XVI century at the will and order of the King of Portugal Manuel I. The monastery was continued in the XVI century. The building of the monastery with a facade three hundred meters long, not only in those times, however, and today is considered a huge structure. This is a real treasure, built in the style of Manueline, whose name is associated with the name of the King himself. In the west wing of the monastery is the National Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum.
