The walk around the Smolny Cathedral
The top photo shows the Smolny Cathedral. The Resurrection Novodevichy Smolny Monastery was located on this territory in the 18th century. Previously, warehouses were located here, where tar for building ships was stored. In the Smolny Cathedral an Orthodox church is currently operating. On one of the bell towers is an observation platform, which you can climb.
The name "Smolny" is associated with the Russian revolution. Lenin led the uprising in 1917 from the Smolny building. But not from the building of the Smolny Cathedral, but from the building of the Smolny Institute for noble maidens. This institute was the first higher education institution for women in Russia. The building of the Smolny Institute is the residence of the governor of St. Petersburg. Before the entrance to the building there is still a bronze Lenin.
