Part of a small trip through Europe, our first leg was in Copenhagen to catch up with some friends. It is a great little city and seemed to function with the usual Scandinavian efficiency. It was Summer but quite cold and rainy the few days we were there. We actually had nothing planned other than meeting the friends so we spent our time wandering the streets and finding what we could.

Rundetaarn (The round tower)
This astronomical observatory features an equestrian staircase that was used to transport instruments and book to the top. It is a bit of a walk to the top but well worth it as it offers good views over Copenhagen.

Nyhavn - the quintessential view of Copenhagen
Any movie that ever has Denmark in it must show this street by order of the king. The colours and style of the buildings set it apart and make it a default landmark. I had the best serve of icecream I may have ever had here. I should say, the best two serves by days end.

Bakken (amusement park)
Nearly every tourist that goes to Copenhagen goes to the Tivoli in the city. The locals go to a family orientated park called Bakken. Our friend worked there and we met him for a meal. I tried desperately to secure my love's heart by playing the games of skill, 30€ later, I 'won' a scruffy 50c toy dog by hooking a duck on an 'everyone wins' game. She was very impressed.

Freetown Christiania
This is like out of the Walking Dead script where a community has developed and supports itself after some cataclysmic event. In Freetown's case, they support themselves with Marijuana. The community has been there for decades and has been some kind of haven where the government dare not tread. There are no cameras allowed past the gates due to the nature of the trade inside. People were friendly, happy and the few eating places seemed to have no trouble selling food.

I would love to have more time in Copenhagen when the weather is warm and sunny. I think there would be an ecclectic range of trendy people doing fun things. With the wind that whipped through the streets at times though, a visit or two might be enough :)

Nice to see these! I was born and grew up in Denmark, just north of Copenhagen... these images bring back old memories-- thanks!

Have you been out of there long?

I moved to the USA in 1981 for university-- and have lived here since, but we go back to Denmark almost every year.

I like how the city is so well maintained and that they aren't scared to mix new and old styles. There seemed to be a lot of development going on in the centre areas.
