A Stone is ingrained with Geological and Historical memories: Vellore Fort
The Vellore Fort is an extensive fort constructed by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire and acted as the headquarters of the Aravidu dynasty of the Empire.
The head architects of Vellore Fort were Chinna Bommi Reddy and Thimma Reddy, who were subordinate leader of the Vijayanagara ruler Sadasiva Raya in 1566 AD. The Vellore Fort is considered as the best military architecture in South India and also one of the best in India.
You will be surprised to know that during the British Empire, Tipu Sultan’s family as well as the last Lord of Sri-Lanka, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, were kept as prisoner inside the fortress. Being ruled by kings from various religions and faiths, the fortress represents a mix of all the cultures.
One of the most interesting features of the fort is the outstanding network of canals that guard the fort on all sides. It is said that the canals surrounding the fort was once home of as many as 10,000 crocodiles – all hungry and ready to feast on any intruder into the fort.
Renowned for its attractive architecture design, robust masonry and grand ramparts, the Vellore Fort was build completely out of granite. The Indian government along with the Archaeological Department of India (ASI) are maintaining the fort that has been recently opened to the visitors. Indian Post and Telegraph Department released a postal stamp of the Vellore Fort in 1981. The famous Christian Medical College Hospital(CMC) is located inside the premises of the fort
