The Miners Monument - A Short History Lesson
The Miners Monument
It was built in 1956 by the architect Ivan Sabolić. Its total height is 10 meters. The monument was dedicated to the miners who lost their lives during short-lived miners strike and armed rebellion against industrial slavery.
A miners' strike began on 21 December 1920 when the miners requested a rise of wages of 30-45%.
The rebellion was choked in blood by the government and the miners and their families' homes were confiscated. Over 400 people were arrested and some were expatriated.
A monument to memorialize the miners was built in 1956, showing a miner dropping his pick for a rifle.
