Rats are a very invasive species. They were not distributed equally on the planet and some parts of the world they only reached by ship in the last centuries. Rats have contributed a lot to the extinction of species in these new regions. They prey for example on eggs of forestbirds or seabirds that have no usual predators on this island. Therefore the birds have no fear of predators at all and are an easy target.

Rats are actually lovely creatures, I think they are misunderstood :)
Yeah, my son and I had a couple of pet rats, several years ago. I think most people would be amazed how gentle they are. Never once bit either one of use, even when you tease them a little bit with a snack. I roll my eyes everytime I see them portrayed in a movie attacking and trying to eat people. Frick'n ridiculous! Just wish they could be potty trained like a cat or dog.
This fact is not about domesticated rats - it's about wild rats killing a lot of sea birds and other animals that have no natural predators ... nature is cruel
