This is the street that all tourists will visits. This is the street that all tourists will have their selfie. It is the existing oldest street in Hong Kong. It may probably be the only existing street that have over 100 years in Hong Kong.
The stone street was built in 1850. The official name is Pottinger Street, named after Henry Pottinger, the first Governor of Hong Kong from 1843-1844. Hong Kong was ceded to UK in 1942. At that moment, The British mainly lived in the Peak and the mid-level above stone street. And the Chinese lived below stone street. For the convenience of the British to go to the two region (and the rickshaws can go up and down the hill faster), the Government built the stone street and stone street between the “bridge” of the Chinese and British regions.
Stone Street 100 years ago (historical photos)
As stone street was built along the slope, workers use big stones to pave the street as stair steps making it more use to walk. So the street was later called “Stone Street”.
Stone street now is a “living fossil” of Hong Kong. It is because stone street is the only street that have over 100 years left in Hong Kong. The south exit of stone street is the core commercial region of Hong Kong. The north exit of stone street is the SoHo, area of clubbing and bars. You can’t imagine the two modern areas are connected by a 150-years-old street.
In the past, as Stone Street is between the British and Chinese living areas, there were a lot of hawkers in Stone Street. 100 years pass, there are still a lot of old shops and boutiques, attracting a lot of tourists.
Many funny stuffs on the street
Stone Street is also a hotspot of Hong Kong movies including “In the Mood for Love”, “Project A”, “Lust, Caution”, “Bodyguards and Assassions”, etc..

Nowadays, Stone Street is already the Grade I historic buildings in Hong Kong. Stepping on the old stones, going through the old shops, from the antique shop, old toys shop, old costume boutique, to modern bars, modern restaurant, and look to the sky, the skyscraper, the commercial center, you will have a strong feeling. This is a very strong feeling of contrast, but, without conflict. I believe that it is the strong feeling of every tourist.

On the street, you may see old men taking walk, photographer taking photos, couples shooting wedding photos, and young ladies whispering. This is a combination that you can’t imagine, but it happens in Stone Street. Maybe, it is the unique characteristic of Hong Kong.

It's always the best!
Hong Kong is on my list to visit while I am staying in SE Asia. I had no idea the old things are so wiped out. It's so interesting to see the past in the old photos and the painting at the end.
This is a really wonderful place and a great post to show it. Thank you so much for bringing it to me. I hope I will get there in person.
Upvoted and resteemed - I was already following :)
Then you must come real soon, Hong Kong is now getting fewer and fewer old buildings and structures. Thanks to our government which only serve rich and powerful people, there is no more culture protection in Hong Kong. All old things will be torn down real soon.
Oh that is so sad- a lot of history is disappearing right as we watch it go. Now am even more glad I saw your post.
yeh please come HK asap if you want to. the city is changing
