According to my experience, art is anything created with the purpose of expressing oneself.

Whenever that purpose is missing or overshadowed by another purpose (to make money, to solve a problem, to communicate a message, to make something "look good", etc, it's not art, but probably design.
Duchamp had said that the artist of the future will be the person who points his finger at something and says this is art, and that will be art. That was the beginning of our conceptual thinking about conceptual art.
