Vermillion Cliffs of the Grand Staircase

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

The western edge of the Escalante Grand Staircase geologic formation ends here. The Grand Staircase refers to an immense sequence of sedimentary rock layers that stretch south from Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, through Zion National Park, and into the Grand Canyon National Park. (Research Source)

I lensed this image will exploring the area south of Zion National Park. You can clearly see the different stratified layers with their vibrant colors defining the topography as though a large colored map.

In the immediate foreground is Lost Spring Mountain and the first mesa, a little to the right and above, is called Little Creek Mountains. Just beyond that is Gooseberry Mesa and on the other side is where the Virgin River flows down from Zion National Park.

All the horizon in this image is Zion and the brightly lit peak in the center of is called Kanarra Mountain, called the highest point in the park. To the left of this image are the small towns of St. George and Hurricane, Utah.

This image is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal   mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

If you are interested in helping with this project I would love to have your assistance! Please consider upvoting or donating and then resteemit so that others may experience these wondrous places as well.
