Toroweap Valley and the Volcanoes of Vulcans Throne

Toroweap Valley shines brightly in the autumn sunlight on this beautifully clear day as I was flying along the north side of the Grand Canyon National Park.  

It was so crystal clear you could see all the way across the horizon to Humphreys Peak, the mountain that is just next to Flagstaff Arizona, over 120 miles away.  

In Toroweap Valley you can make out the small cinder pit remnants of volcanoes. There is a line of 5 extinct volcanoes in this image and a huge lava flow along the right side of the valley. 

On the right side of this image are the Unikaret Mountains and in the middle of the image are the deep canyons the Colorado River has carved over time. 

At the end of Toroweap Valley, peeking out over the Unikaret Mountains, lays Vulcans Throne.  All the land on the other side of that valley is part of the First Nations Hualapai Reservation. “Hualapai” (pronounced Wal-lah-pie) translates to “People of the Tall Pines.” 

Their reservation encompasses about one million acres along 108 miles of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Occupying part of three northern Arizona counties: Coconino, Yavapai, and Mohave , the reservation’s topography varies from rolling grassland, to thick forests, to rugged canyons. Elevations range from 1,500 feet at the Colorado River, to over 7,300 feet at the highest point of the Aubrey Cliffs.

I lensed this image while exploring the wilderness areas north of the Grand Canyon along the Kanab Plateau. This is another post from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.  

Called "Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition", this is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.
