Dutch Ridge and Paul Bunyan's Cabin Across Sullivan Meadow on the Flathead River

in #photography7 years ago

The North Fork of the Flathead River twists along the foreground in the bottom of this image I lensed while exploring the wilderness area to the west of Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. I took this image on the ground near Demers Ridge while shooting due east. Canada is about 14 miles to the left of this image.

The valley is called Sullivan Meadow and across the valley lies Dutch Ridge, shrouded by clouds and blanketed by the years first light snowfall. Behind Dutch Ridge is along the top of the mountain lays a very interesting rock formation named "Paul Bunyan's Cabin". This is a large rock spur immediately to the south-southeast of Longfellow Peak which, from certain angles looks just like a log cabin!

This is the Livingston Range, a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains located in Glacier National Park. The mountain on the right side of the image is called Roger Peak and the one on the left is Wolf Gun Mountain.

This area has been a traditional hunting and fishing grounds for multiple First Nations Cree Tribes since time immemorial.

  • The Canadian Cree in the sub-arctic region were fishers and enjoyed pike and salmon. They hunted a variety of game including caribou, moose, elk, deer, wolves, bears, beavers and rabbits
  • The food of the Plains Cree was predominantly buffalo but also they also hunted deer, elk, bear and wild turkey. Their diet was supplemented with roots and wild fruit and vegetables
  • The food of the Woodland Cree were fish and small game including squirrel, deer, raccoon, bear, and beaver. Corn (maize), pumpkin, squash, and beans were also available

This area below would have a few Teepees in camps near the river banks during hunting season. They would prepare the meat and hides for transportation back to their main tribal camps north into Canada.

They hunted this valley until 1905 when they were finally convinced to cease their long used method of lighting forest fires to drive out game into the low land meadows where they could be more easily hunted.

This image is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

Thank you @skypilot for sharing these wonderful images with us! I was wondering which camera (or gear in general) you are using to create these stunning shots?

David for this image I used a Hassleblad H5D with a 60mpx back.

That is an incredible picture. I wonder what happened with the votes on this one? You must have posted this one when everyone was sleeping. LOL. I know what it was, they don't like any pictures that were taken on the ground. LOL
