#Treetuesday: Barbara Bushs Mammouth Tree in Bonn / Barbaras Mammutbaum [English/Deutsch]

Dear giants,

in accordance with todays #treetuesday I want to show you a huge mammouth tree segment, that is located at the "Rheinaue" leisure park in my hometown Bonn.

I've photgraphed this natural monument last week with my iPhone.

Liebe Riesen,

da heute mal wieder #treetuesday (Baum-Dienstag) ist, möchte ich euch heute eine riesige Baumscheibe eines Mammutbaums zeigen, die im Freizeitpark Rheinaue steht.

Ich habe diese Naturdenkmal letzte Woche mit meinem iPhone fotografiert. (Die Schilder sind eigentlich selbsterklärend, daher habe ich nur die englische Übersetzung hinzugefügt.)

English translation (by me):

"Mrs. Barbara Bush, the wife of american president George Bush, had brought this segment of a 750 years old Californian mammoth tree as a gift from the American people to the citizens of Bonn in celebration of the 2000 years celebration of the city. It should be a symbol for the permanent friendship between Germany and the US. The signs, that have been placed at the respective annual rings are reminding of important dates in the history of Bonn."

1789 Landscape gardener Peter Joseph Lenné born in Bonn.

English translation:

French troups occupy Bonn, that belongs to France until 1814.
1818 Formation of the „Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms“ University in Bonn.

The mammoth tree

"The largest tree of the world. Redwood or mammoth tree (sequoia sempervirens), is natively coming from the American Westcoast in Central- and North-California, and also from Southwest-Oregon. A mammoth tree can reach a height of 110 meters, a diameter of 6 meters and an age of 2000 years.

Such an age assumes an unique resilience against natural disasters. Therefore the mammoth tree is extensively immune against pests and fungal infestation. He furthermore is capable of renewing his treetop and root system even after devastating forest fires and floodings.

The mammoth tree, from which this segment was taken, had been approved for felling within the scope of thinning at the North-Californian „Six Rivers National Forest“ by the national forestry comission office.

This tree segment was brought in 1989 by a Hapag-Lloyd container-ship from California to Germany. On ships of this shipping company about 25 million expats travelled from the old to the new world since 1848."
