📷 Swirls of Color - Soap Film Photography

Beauty in Chaos

The Science

Light striking the upper and lower boundaries of the thin soap film will cause different angles of reflection and refraction, due to the difference of the refractive index of the soap film compared to air. These reflected and refracted waves cause constructive and destructive interference and form different wavelengths of light showing up as different colors.

Micro turbulence in the surrounding air and gravity help change the shape of the film, causing water to flow down and the soap to swirl around, this creates a random pattern each time. It is almost like watching swirling clouds of colorful gases mixing about until the film bursts.

The Setup

I used my 100 mm macro lens to capture the close-up photos of soap film. For the soap, I used store bought bubble solution and used an LED light as my light source. The camera was set up on a tripod.

The Results

Hope you enjoyed these shots!
