A walk through the nature reserve "Schilfsandsteinbruch Jägerhaus" in Heilbronn (Germany)

For the Easter weekend we stayed with my parents-in-law in Heilbronn. On Saturday the weather was still nice and so we decided to go for a little walk to a nearby nature reserve, called Schilfsandsteinbruch Jägerhaus.
At the center of the park is a sandstone pit which had been in use for more than 500 years. Entire city districts of Heilbronn had been built with this sandstone. It was also used for the Cologne Cathedral as well as for the Heidelberg Castle and even exported to Berlin and Amsterdam.
At the end of the 19th century more than 100 workers were busy carving out the stone from this pit with drills and stone saws.
In 1972 the pit had been closed down after metal and concrete had started to replace stone as the main building material.
