My View of Paris, Barbizon StylesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

The photos in this collection were taken when I last visited the "City of Light" in 2010. I wanted to pay tribute to this city that I love so much by returning home with wonderful images. Unfortunately, I did not have the optimal photo equipment and traveling as a tourist, I ended up photographing at the worst possible times of the day. Given my background in painting, I decided to work on post production to give those images a painterly look and called upon the Barbizon style of painting to the rescue.

According to Wikipedia, the Barbizon school of painting started in the village of Barbizon, France in the 1830s and was born as a response to the romantic movement so dominant during that time. Artists in the Barbizon school favored more realism rather than romanticism in art and focused more on tonal qualities, color, loose brushwork, and softness of form. Early artists such as John Constable, drew inspiration directly from nature and made the French landscape the major theme. Later, with Jean-François Millet, peasant figures and scenes of peasant life were introduced as main subjects.

Tonal qualities

The original image was too contrasty so I used Photoshop to decrease contrast. I also dodged and burned selected areas of the buildings, trees, clouds, and the water.

Loose brushwork

I applied a series of textures to the image and used a variety of blending modes to give the image a kind of rough look especially in the sky.

Color

For the color palette, I got inspiration from some of my favorite movies such as Game of Thrones, Hobbit, Harry Potter, Matrix, and others. I noticed a constant element used in color grading those films: cool colors in the shadows and warm tones in the highlights.

Softness of form

The original image was way too sharp. I started by blurring it with two filters in Photoshop and used some other techniques to eliminate some of the details.

Once I was happy with the results, I processed the other images in the same way. You can view the full collection on RfotoFolio and Szeroki Kadr by Nikon

I like the dark atmosphere that you created with the painting. It looks like a painting done a couple centuries ago.
