Ancient Stirrings

One of the most spectacular hikes along the southern coast of Kauai is from Shipwreck Beach is to Makauwahi Cave Reserve and then onto Maha'ulepu Beach. Once you reach the cave site and the beach you will come upon a tortoise sanctuary.

The tortoises where brought to this area from Africa to help control invasive species in the area and preserve the native vegetation.

Seeing and interacting with these ancient looking creatures was truly wonderful.
